                                                                                                   William Arnold

First Sheriff of Grant County and Founder of Williamstown, Kentucky

                                                                                             by Virgil Chandler, Sr.

                                                                                      Preface & Acknowledgments

I decided to start researching the family of William Arnold after the discovery of the log house he had built around the turn of the nineteenth century, which was located on High Street in Williamstown. While trying to prove the ownership of the house and property, I found virtually nothing in the Public Library about Mr. Arnold or his descendants. As an example of researching complications, I found three versions of birth places for him and two for his wife. Two of those alleged; for William were from his descendants and the last being from a sworn statement he made while applying for a government pension in 1816. It seemed logical to use the latter, as I felt Mr. Arnold would have known where he was born.

I am most grateful to my friend and fellow researcher John Browning Conrad, Grant County native and editor of the award winning History of Grant County, Kentucky,. He has spent many hours out of state researching the Arnold family. Acknowledgment is also necessary to four of William and Lucy Arnold's descendants: Mrs. Evelyn Russell Cary of Louisville and her brother William F. Russell of Bradenton, Florida; Philip Naif of Indianapolis; and Adelaide Rice Carr of Toledo, Ohio for their time and research and use of their family photographs and papers.

William Arnold was born in East Jersey in the late 1750s 1 and at the age of sixteen be moved to Virginia and volunteered for the Virginia Line to serve in the Revolutionary War. He served three tours in the war.2, 3  According to family traditions, he held the rank of Captain and was a personal friend of General LaFayette and they served together at Yorktown when Lord Cornwallis surrendered in October 1781. For After the siege of Yorktown, Arnold returned to his Virginia home.3

William left Virginia for Kentucky around 1783 and settled on its frontiers He had spent three years fighting the British and now peace had come and he was looking for a better life on the frontier. That was not to be, for he spent the next seven years fighting in the Indian Wars.3

Sometime after he returned to his Virginia home from the war be contracted marriage with a Lucy Pryor, a native Virginian.6 By the late 17808 two children were born: a son John Arnold around July 1788 and a daughter Sarah, born around August 1789.

The Captain William Arnold Chapter Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was named in his honor.
